Richard Shields
(Pastor of MHBC from 1958 - July, 1961)
Richard M. Shields was born November 24, 1926 at Beaver Dam,
Kentucky, son of Irvin and Iva Shields. Bro. Shields has two
sisters, Jo Ann Shields Davis and Ruby Nell Shields Haven.
He was married in October, 1946 to Martha Stith Dowell. To this
union were born seven children: Alan Wayne, Andrew Thomas,
Paul Maurice, Susan Marie, Richard Neal, Martin Ivan, and Joel
Irvin.
He professed faith in Christ in the summer of 1937 at age eleven during revival
services at Bold Knob Methodist Church.
He was called to preach in the spring of 1946, while in the Navy, and surrendered in
the summer of 1949.
His vocation before entering the ministry was a shoe repairman, operating his own
repair shop.
Bro. Shields was ordained at Vine Grove Baptist Church in Vine Grove, Kentucky on
November 26, 1950. He was graduated from Vine Grove High School in 1944;
Georgetown College in 1954, and attended Southern Baptist Seminary one year in
1961 and 1962.
His pastorates include: Zion Baptist Church, 1950-1952; Lewisburg Baptist Church,
1952-1954; Locust Grove Baptist Church, 1954-1956; Double Springs Baptist Church,
1956-1958; Muldraugh Hill Baptist Church, 1958-1961; Eastwood Baptist Church,
1961-1963; Woodlawn Baptist Church, 1963-1964; Magnolia Baptist Church, 1964-
1966; Mount Carmel Baptist Church, 1966-1970; Eastwood Baptist Church, 1970-
1972; and Palestine Baptist Church in Taylor County.
